Thunder Cool Mint portion snus, reviewing a sweeter Thunder Mint!

                                                      Welcome Back Snustopians!

Well, as you can imagine, every television here in Skruf Square has been tuned in to the 2012 Olympic Games for the past five days, including the three here in my office! As I sat there watching the White Water rafting trials and deciding on which snus to review, I was taken back to a scene I saw while in Denmark last month. The weather was nice and cool and while we walked along the river that ran thru Silkeborg, we stumbled across a small rapids. I had a portion of Thunder Cool Mint in and thought what a peacefull view and Thunder Cool Mint portion snus was the perfect snus for a day like this! Then I remembered that Thunder Cool Mint is a relatively new snus in the V2 Tobacco portfolio and decided that this will be the snus we will review this week! So, set your DVR's to record some of the Olympics, grab a portion or prilla of your favorite snus and a cold drink and let's begin our review of Thunder Cool Mint portion snus by V2 Tobacco! (click here to read the full story!)

Now, before we get into the review of Thunder Cool Mint, there has been a bit of confusion between this snus and Thunder Frosted. While both are intensely flavored with mint, they are two separate snus flavors with completely different characteristics. We will go thru a review of Thunder Frosted in the very near future but I just wanted to clear that up! So, with that out of the way, let's see just what Thunder Cool Mint portion snus is!

Thunder Cool Mint portion snus is another quality snus made by Marc and Patrick Vogel of V2 Tobacco in Silkeborg, Denmark. Introduced in early 2012, Thunder Cool Mint is classed as an Original type portion which, for you new Snustopians, is a portion that goes thru an additional wetting step prior to being packaged. This additional step adds a few drops of water to the portion material and helps the tobacco meld better with the flavorings. It also turns the portion material brown from its original white and allows the flavor to be sensed as soon as the portion is put in the lip. The portion material that V2 uses for Thunder Cool Mint is the same soft, tea bag type material that they use for all their snus brands and is pretty comfortable in the lip. I've had a portion in for up to 2 1/2 hours with no discomfort whatsoever.

Each can of Thunder Cool Mint portion snus contains 22, .9 gram portions with each portion containing 16 mg of Nicotine. The Nicotine content of Thunder Cool Mint is the same as the rest of V2's Thunder line which is one of the strongest among all Swedish snus brands. "Sounds more and more like its the same as Thunder Frosted Snus Guy! Where's the difference?" Now, now....you guys are jumping the gun here. Just because they both have the same Nicotine content and are mint flavored, doesn't mean that they are the same! Let's finish the technicallities and I'll explain the flavor differences. Now, the Nicotine content may scare off some of the new Snustopians but let me assure you, it's really manageable but, I'll leave it up to you to decide. Like my pops always said, "you'll never know until you try it."

The can that Thunder Cool Mint comes in is the typical black plastic can that V2 uses for all their portion and has the typical sized used portion compartment built in the lid. The label is actually pretty cool! The graphics are in a light blue color scheme with a summery splash theme. It's also a plastic type material that keeps the can sealed well until you open it. Even then, the lids that V2 uses fit really well and stay closed while in the pocket or, if it falls of the table. A pretty cool thing I learned while at the factory was that the cans that they use are made in Denmark and pretty close to the factory! I know......more can obsessed commentary so before I go completely OCD on the can, let's go on to the flavor of Thunder Cool Mint!

V2 describes Thunder Cool Mint as a strong Nicotine snus with the cool flavor of Peppermint. While I agree with this description, I think there's a bit more to it really! One of the most asked questions I get from new Snustopians, when it comes to mint flavored snus is, "what causes the burn in my lip Snus Guy?" It's simple really. Well, it isn't really but at the risk of being tagged as That Science Guy as opposed to That Snus Guy, I'll give you the simple answer. Mint flavorings, such as Spearmint, Wintergreen, Peppermint and so on, contain a natural chemical that triggers the pain receptors in the mouth. Instead of feeling pain like one would feel with chili peppers, this chemical makes the brain translate it into a cooling feeling. You get the same reaction from mint flavored toothpaste or, a Wintergreen Lifesaver. Ok, Science class is over, back to the flavor review!

While the flavor of Thunder Cool Mint is definitely a long lasting mint, there's more to it. What I taste is a fresh minty that has a light sweetness to it! Think those Starlight Mints that restaurants give you after your meal and you'll have the flavor of Thunder Cool Mint! For those seasoned Snustopians that are thinking that this is just a re-engineered Thunder Frosted, you couldn't be more wrong! Where Thunder Frosted is an "In Your Face", supercharged Mint flavor, Thunder Cool Mint is a more mellow, sweeter tasting Mint snus. I liken it to the same flavor as General Mint but, stronger and much longer lasting. In essence, Snustopians who like the flavor of General Mint but, wish it had more flavor, lasted longer and had more Nicotine, Thunder Cool Mint is the answer. I've had a portion of Cool Mint in for over 2 hours and the flavor just keeps going! As for other flavors in this snus, there really isn't any. It's just cool peppermint from start to finish with no bitterness at the end. So, what drinks would pair well with Thunder Cool Mint? Let's take a look!

As you all know, I'm a bit of a tea freak and I think Cool Mint is a great compliment to many different stronger teas. English Breakfast tea and other black teas go really well with Cool Mint. I say this because the Mint flavor in Cool Mint can stand up to the stronger flavors in black teas. Lighter teas like White tea and Green tea tend to be to weak and the mint flavor mutes the tea's flavor completely. It still goes well with them but, if you like to taste the tea as well as the snus, I recommend sticking with the black teas. From an adult beverage standpoint, stronger drinks will go well with Cool Mint! One that comes to mind would be an old fashioned Mint Juliep. Bourbons tend to be pretty strongly flavored and the strong yet sweet flavor of Thunder Cool Mint would be perfect! Another one would be a Mojito. Since the primary flavor of a Mojito is mint, the Sweetness of Cool Mint would pair really well but, try it with your favorite drinks and I'll let you be the judge!

My overall recommendation for Thunder Cool Mint portion snus by V2 Tobacco Snustopians, is this; if you're a Snustopian who is a die hard fan of General Mint but wish it was stronger in flavor and Nicotine, Thunder Cool Mint is the perfect snus for you. New Snustopians looking to try a strong snus with a familiar flavor and no saltiness, Thunder Cool Mint would fit that bill! But, like I always say, everyone should give Thunder Cool Mint a try and form your own opinions. I'm pretty new to this snus stuff but I have to admit, its amazing! First time I came to contact with snus was on in Majorca, met some Swedish people and they've introduced me to it, I loved it! I bought thunder cool mint last week online, its strong, both nicotine and the mint flavour, I would also recommend it to anyone as it is refreshing and lasts for ages!
